Mono - For My Parents

Mono is a Japanese post-rock band that formed in 1999. Since then, the band has released a handful of records, much of them receiving plenty of critical acclaim. They have remained a steady staple of post-rock music and a band that is often counted on for their very colorful, majestic arrangements. For My Parents is the newest release by the quartet and is a very standard release by the band. The music is exactly what you would expect from them as they incorporate these grandiose sections with some ostentatious production that seems almost overwhelming in an odd way. Like their last record entitled Hymn To The Immortal Wind, even Mono seems to get lost in their outrageous and complex verse structures and it tends to become a bit pompous in a way. Post-rock needs to have strong build ups with tremendous climaxes that bring all the sounds together but Mono always seems to drift away and disregard this very basic element. As usual, Mono is creating some very elegant atmospheres that are quite gorgeous but the lengthy track times that don't have any real escape just end up being a bit boring and a little less fruitful than what post-rock music is normally accustomed to.

Calvin Harris Ft. Florence Welch (of Florence & The Machine) - Sweet Nothing (Tiesto Remix)

What a track ... three faves, Florence, Calvin Harris and Tiesto have come together to make this banging track! Another BBC Radio 1 rip... wish we had this quality broadcasting on the radio waves here in Australia.

Drake Ft Dawn Richard - Where Were You

Drake has just revealed his brand new track called "Where Were You". Instead of offering upbeat tempo, the Dawn Richard-assisted song is more of an alluring ballad with clicking beats, expensive-sounding synths and mid-paced tempo. Drizzy sings about a man who still feels desperate even years after breaking up with his girlfriend.

"I have to watch the road, I swear that every car that passes has you in it, I can't believe we're finished, My life is movin' fast, The time will often pass, And something will remind me, I can't put this behind me," so Drake softly croons in the verse.

There's still no word on whether "Where Were You" will appear in Drake's upcoming album or mixtape. The Canadian artist's manager and producer Colin Munroe explains that the track was supposed to be Drizzy's collaboration with him and producers Boi-1da and D10.

The song was initially submitted to be included in Drake's 2010 studio set "Thank Me Later". Since it was eventually not featured in the album, Munroe released his own version of the song titled "Whatever Became of You", which was included in his mixtape "Unsung Hero".

[Verse 1: Drake]
I have to watch the road
I swear that every car that passes has you in it
I can’t believe we’re finished
My life is movin’ fast
The time will often pass
And something will remind me
I can’t put this behind me
I thought you would’ve called by now, by now
You could’ve had my all by now, by now
It’s been too many years for you to disappear
And have me asking the question

[Hook]
I wonder whatever became of you
Although, It’s not that I’m surprised, It’s not I didn’t try
It’s not that I was frightened, of you
Although, I said all goodbyes
And, you had all your cries
I wonder whatever became of you
I wonder whatever became of you
I wonder whatever became of you

[Verse 2: Dawn Richard]
I swear I heard you call
But when I heard you’d gone
I hate that I looked desperate
You gone is like me naked
I’m staring at your (?)
Trying to make it last
Keep looking close behind me
My eyesight on a memory
I thought you would’ve called by now, by now
You could have all my love right now, by now
Gave into my fears
While you just disappeared
That’s why I’m asking this question…

[Hook]
I wonder whatever became of you
Although, It’s not that I’m surprised, It’s not I didn’t try
It’s not that I was frightened, of you
Although, I said all goodbyes
And, you had all your cries
I wonder whatever became of you
I wonder whatever became of you
I wonder whatever became of you

[Verse 3: Drake]
I can’t go to bed
Thinking about my goals
And how we used to say a goal is just a dream with a deadline
Where did the other half of my heart go?
Why am I in bed alone?
How come when I drive by, it looks like you are never home?
Do you even live there?
Or did you take a U-Haul?
Too far, move off and not even tell me that you’re gone?
We were on fire
Somehow that fire cooled off, burnt out
I kept straight, but I wonder how you turned out

[Hook]
I wonder whatever became of you
Although, It’s not that I’m surprised, It’s not I didn’t try
It’s not that I was frightened, of you
Although, I said all goodbyes
And, you had all your cries
I wonder whatever became of you
I wonder whatever became of you
I wonder whatever became of you

Priyanka Chopra ft. will.i.am - In My City

Not the best song, but hey, it's Priyanka Chopra...

Priyanka Chopra has added another feather to her cap with her international debut as a singer with the single In My City, featuring will.i.am. The album itself is expected to be released early next year, the promotional video of which will be launched internationally at the National Football League in the US on NFL network.

In an interview, Priyanka talks about her singing debut, fulfilling her father's dream, and the challenges that came her way.

You are making your singing debut with an international music single. How does that feel?
I am thrilled to launch my debut album. This is a culmination of a two-year journey that has been the toughest yet the most enriching experience of my life. It also marks the beginning of a new chapter. I walked into this project as a novice with no training in making music and today I am proud to be able to do something on a global platform that India would be proud of.

How did your musical dreams shape up?
When I was shooting for 7 Khoon Maaf in Coorg, I was in a very serious headspace. My manager, Natasha Pal, insisted I just have a meeting with a music label, as it could be an interesting idea. I came back from Coorg and met a couple of people from Universal Music Group. I was wondering how these people came to know that I could sing. I came to know that it was (composer) Salim Merchant who told them that I could sing. Later, Jimmy Lovine (chairman of Inerscope Records) came on board and then Red One, who won two Grammies last year, also became a part of the album.

It looked like everything was coming together. My vocal coach Sam helped me a lot. She came with me to all the shoots that I did in the last two years. After pack up, we would do the riyaz and concentrate on my notes and range. I never thought I could sing like this. It has been a wonderful journey.

Alpine - Hands (Goldroom Remix)

Josh Legg, the Los Angeles-based musician better known as Goldroom, has dropped off another scorcher for our listening pleasure . It’s a fun, dance-tastic take on Alpine’s 'Hands' and it is sure to cheer you up on this boring start to the week.

Goldroom has been bringing the heat lately with remixes of Lancelot, Citizens!, and of course this track. Everything this guy touches seems to turn into music blog gold. Enjoy and be sure to keep an eye out on more Goldroom remixes, which are likely to be invading your headphones soon enough.

UltraĆsta - Smalltalk (Four Tet Remix)

Stop with the small talk
Won't you
Don't wanna feed the nightmare

Sharp memory talks
I hear around the room
Don't wanna hear no more
Hear no more from you

Stop with the small talk
Won't you
I don't wanna hear the nightmare

Sharp memory talks
I hear around the room
Don't wanna hear no more
Hear no more from you

And you no longer seem to cope
With what you ask for

But if you haven't gone back
How can you start again

This south island
Is thorn apart
But I'm stuck in it
For this time

When I breath
Does it show that the more I learn
The less I know
Is not enough to crawl back
Because you have to realise
That if you choose to start again
You gonna leave me mid-air

And you no longer seem to cope
With what you ask for

And you no longer seem to cope
With what you ask for

Stop with the small talk
Won't you
Don't wanna feed the nightmare

Sharp memory talks
I hear around the room
Don't wanna hear no more
Hear no more from you

And you no longer seem to cope
With what you ask for

And you no longer seem to cope
With what you ask for

This south island
Is thorn apart
But I'm stuck in it
For this time

When I breath
Does it show that the more I learn
The less I know

The XO Crew

The XO crew is taking over the R&B game. First Drake, then The Weeknd. Now? Julian Cruz, Omari Shakir, Kendrick Lamar. You know you gotta hit play when The Weeknd recommends it. Toronto just has talent.

These dropped back before August, so I’m a little late to the game, but these tracks are still kind of sitting on low heat. They’re just waiting to boil over. This dark, stab your ears with sexy stilettos, gothic style R&B paired to hollow beats and explicit lyrics is some good ish, and exactly what you should think about listening to.

Guess all we can do now is take out a cigarette and go walk around for a bit. Maybe find a pretty lady with high heels? Mmhmm.

The Weeknd - Wicked Games (New Version)

It's only been a few days since Universal Republic announced Toronto R&B singer, The Weeknd, is now apart of their music family, and fans already have a new version of the House Of Balloon's banger "Wicked Games."

"The Knowing" singer is scheduled to re-release his three highly acclaimed mixtapes, House Of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes Of Silence as a trilogy package on November 13.

All of the mixtape tracks are slated to be re-mastered and re-edited for major label standards, and with those revisions some of the tracks may sound a little, well, different.

The Weeknd released the re-mastered version of "Wicked Games," which boasts a brand new intro and a few alternate variations.

PSY - Gangnam Style

This track is trending all over the place ... not entirely sure why to be honest, but it's slowly growing on me and I'm sure it will become very obvious in Singapore next week.

"Gangnam Style" is a Korean language colloquialism that refers to a luxurious lifestyle associated with the Gangnam district, an affluent and trendy area of Seoul. Gangnam style is since widely associated with the posh lifestyle in Seoul, South Korea's district where people are trendy, hippy and exude a certain swag. In an interview, PSY compares Gangnam to Berverly Hills in the United States.

The music video depicts Psy dancing at various locations in Gangnam. The song translates to something along these lines:

"A lady who is warm like daylight, who knows how to enjoy a cup of coffee with ease, whose heart gets hotter as night gets near, a lady who has unexpected character.

I am a man who gets hot in the daytime like you! I am a man who can have one shot of coffee before cooling it down, a man with a heart that explodes at night, I am that kind of man. I am (big brother), Oppa Gangnam Style!!!

A lady who looks conservative, but knows when to play hard, a lady who knows when to let her hair down, a lady who seems fragile, but sexy at the same time.

I am a man's man, I may be conservative, yet I know when to have fun and play hard. A man who can go crazy when the time is right, a man who is bulging with social life instead of bulging with muscles. I am the man.

You are beautiful, lovable, yes, you."

Essentially, the song is about finding the perfect girlfriend who knows when to be refined and when to get wild (oh, hello!)

This track used to be a repeat on the car CD player during a summer some time ago ... not sure when this was, but I do recall the windows down and a hot xmas period day, wind blowing through my hair, and a beach in the not too distant horizon...

Anjulie - You And I

Anjulie was born and raised in Oakville, Ontario, Canada and is the youngest of four children. Her parents are from Guyana but are of Indian descent, her grandparents having immigrated there from India. Anjulie's background and what she calls her "racial ambiguity" led to isolation while growing up; in middle school, she said, "the black kids would be on one side and the white kids would be on the other... so I would mostly hang out by myself and write". However, though "it was hard that [she] didn't fit in", she decided to embrace her differences and was driven to "carve [her] own niche".

Best foodies in Sydney

Some rose, some fell and plenty were rewarded for throwing their hat into the ring in a tough year for restaurants.

In the snakes and ladders world of Sydney dining, 27 restaurants gained at least one chef's hat at The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide awards last night while 12 restaurants were shucked of their prestigious toques.

The great Italian diner Buon Ricordo leapfrogged the city's other great trattoria, Lucio's, the latter losing one of its two long-held hats and the former gaining one back to became a two-hatter.

However, it was a night to celebrate a slew of newcomers, who braved proclamations of the death of fine dining and the closure of at least a dozen top Sydney eateries to open restaurants.

A flurry of openings resulted in the highest number of metropolitan new entries in the history of the guide, among them Bar H by the former Kylie Kwong protege Hamish Ingham, Matt Moran's Chiswick and Star casino newcomers Balla, Black by Ezard and Momofuku Seiobo.

And despite the Restaurant of the Year award going to Peter Gilmore's Quay, it was a memorable year for Momofuku Seiobo, which completed the most astronomical rise ever seen by Good Food Guide editors Terry Durack and Joanna Savill.

The first Momofuku outside New York for the Korean-American chef David Chang, recently named one of Time magazine's 100 people who most affect our world, shot straight into the exclusive three-hat club after it opened in the Star last year.

The tiny 30-seater, headed by chef Ben Greeno, joins five other three-hatters: est., Marque, Quay, Rockpool on George and Sepia.

Despite their restaurant not joining the three-hat club, tattooed, rockabilly chefs Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz, of Porteno, were named chefs of the year for being "great innovators that are steering the course with their own style and incredible talent", Savill said.

In previous years, the annual awards night has been the scene of tears, barbs and high-profile demotions - among them the shock move for Tetsuya's from three to two hats in 2010, where it remains this year - but there was "not a lot of blood on the floor this year," Savill said. "It's a celebration this time."

Alpine - A is for Alpine (album)

Big fan of this band since watching them play live at the Rdio Launch Party earlier this year ... after the release of their album this year, I cannot wait to keep an eye on what this band has to come in the future (two sold out Sydney shows and Triple J support can't be wrong).

After forming in 2009, national radio station Triple J played their demos on air and awarded them the ‘JJJ Unearthed Feature Artist Of The Week’ blue ribbon before they even had time to prepare their first live show. The band signed to Ivy League Records in August 2010, and released a single, ‘Heartlove’ a month later. Their first record, an EP titled ‘Zurich’, was released in November 2010, followed by a second single from the record, ‘Villages’. In October 2011, the first single from their debut album, entitled ‘Hands’ was released. The album ‘A is for Alpine’ has now been released as well.

2012 album from the Australian Indie Rock band. Alpine formed in 2009 and have gone from strength-to-strength ever since. Likened to Phoenix, Lykke Li and The xx, they’ve held the mantle of triple j Unearthed Feature Artist and have found friends online, on air and on paper. Fusing synths with honeyed harmonies, hypnotic rhythms and bright beats, Alpine appeared on the scene with a set of demos that quickly caught the attention of music lovers around the world. 2010 saw the release of their critically lauded debut EP Zurich as well as tours alongside the likes of Cloud Control, Jinja Safari, The Naked and Famous, Catcall, not to mention their own sold out national headline tour to boot.

You can listen to the whole album on Spotify, or a couple of the tracks from here: http://soundcloud.com/alpineband/sets/a-is-for-alpine/.
